If you’ve ever thought about buying a dedicated e-reader, Amazon will once again have huge discounts on some of its Kindle e-readers as part of Prime Day 2020. Now that it’s underway, you can get $ 50 off the Kindle Paperwhite, making it only $ 80 ̵
Prime Day is also an opportune time to consider the entry-level Kindle Kids Edition. You can save $ 35 off the $ 110 list price and also get a free case and one year of Amazon’s Kid Plus subscription service, worth $ 36.
Additionally, Amazon will offer a $ 5 “any Kindle book” credit with the purchase of select Kindle devices.
Like most other Prime Day sales, these are expected to start Tuesday, October 13 at 12:01 am PT and run for up to 48 hours. If you don’t see the deal you were hoping for, don’t lose hope – experience has shown us that there are probably more Kindle Prime Day deals on the way.
It’s unclear whether the high-end Kindle Oasis or the basic Kindle (non-Kids Edition) will also be on sale, but we’ll keep an eye on their prices because Amazon often enters into previously unannounced deals (plus a lightning deal or two ) on your devices on Prime Day. This is the Goldilocks in the Amazon line and our current CNET Editors’ Choice in the category. Here are some things we love about the Kindle Paperwhite:
- It is 10% thinner and lighter than the previous version.
- It has a “flush front” design with a back made of a softer, more adherent material instead of hard plastic.
- It’s a fully waterproof Kindle, like the high-end Kindle Oasis, and has a plastic screen that Amazon claims is resistant to bumps and scratches.
- It has built-in Bluetooth, so you can download Amazon Audible audiobooks and listen to them with wireless headphones.
Note that Amazon may update the Kindle Paperwhite in 2020 (it was released in November 2018). If and when that happens, it’s unclear how much of an update it will be. For example, USB-C charging could be added and perhaps the lighting scheme could be updated, but we wouldn’t expect any dramatic updates.

The latest version of Amazon’s entry-level ebook reader, which Amazon simply calls the Kindle, now has a self-illuminated screen and an updated design. At $ 90, this ebook reader costs $ 10 more than the previous model, the 2016 Kindle, but this Kindle device is regularly on sale for as little as $ 60. We prefer the Amazon Kindle Paperwhite, which has the high-powered display. resolution (text and images appear a little sharper), it’s waterproof and has a slightly better lighting pattern. But if you don’t want to spend a lot on an e-reader, the standard Kindle is a good option, especially when it’s cheap.
The Kids Edition on sale here includes a case – there are 4 storage options to choose from – along with a year’s worth of Amazon Kids Plus (FreeTime Unlimited), which normally costs $ 3 a month and gives you access to hundreds of children’s books . Amazon Kids Plus includes the complete Harry Potter series and the first book of other popular series such as Artemis Fowl.
