Android Auto prepares custom shortcuts for the Google Assistant

While fans of using Android in the car may be more excited about the upcoming launch of the Google Assistant driving mode, Android Auto is preparing improvements with custom shortcuts to assistant actions and contacts.

About APK Insight: In this “APK Insight” post, we have decompiled the latest version of an application that Google has uploaded to the Play Store. When we decompile these files (called APKs, in the case of Android apps), we are able to see various lines of code within that hint about possible future features. Please note that Google may or may not provide these features and our interpretation of what they are may be imperfect. However, we will try to allow those closest to the end to show you how they will look in case they are shipped. With that in mind, read on.

Assistant and contact shortcuts

Today in Android Auto, you can access some Google Assistant routines such as Calendar and News, which simply run a preset query that the Assistant audibly responds to. In the latest Android Auto update, version 5.7, we find that Google is preparing to let you save your most common queries for the Google Assistant and make them easily accessible in the launcher.

We can even see this upcoming feature in action, like Mishaal Rahman of XDA has enabled the Assistant part of this feature. In the screenshots provided, we see that we will be able to enter the exact command you want to give the Assistant and a custom name for that command, to be displayed in the Android Auto launcher.

As seen above, assistant shortcuts in Android Auto will be assigned a simple icon based on the first letter of the custom label. These custom routines should allow one-touch access to multiple Google services, as well as smart home-related actions, such as adjusting the Nest thermostat when you come home for the day.

Additionally, Android Auto will give you the option to save a custom launcher icon for one of your favorite contacts. Tapping this icon should immediately initiate a phone call with that contact.
