The Canadian police said at least four people were killed in a shootout in Fredericton, New Brunswick, in the east of the country. The accident is ongoing.
Fredericton police said they were responding to the incident in the Brookside Drive area of the city at approximately 7:30 am local time on Friday. The circumstances of the shooting were not immediately clear. The police said that more information would be provided when further details are confirmed.
"The public is asked to avoid the area and stay in their homes with locked doors at this time for their safety," the police tweeted.
Firefighters and paramedics have been deployed on the scene, reported the Canadian CBC broadcaster.
Robert DiDiodato, who lives near the scene of the accident, said he heard a series of "firecrackers" noises at around 7 am: m, CBC reported.
"By the time, it may have been a has been a bit like a pop, pop, pop, pop," he said.
He said he heard similar sounds about five minutes later. "The doors are closed and everyone is inside," he said, according to CBC.
Fredericton, the capital of the New Brunswick province, has a population of about 60,000.
