Bengals vs. Chargers Score: Turnovers, missed field goal ruin Joe Burrow’s NFL debut

That was wild. Ten unanswered points from visiting shippers gave them a 16-13 lead over the Bengals on Sunday. After 13-6 early in the fourth quarter, a 46-yard kickback return from rookie Joe Reed set in motion fellow rookie Joshua Kelley’s 5-yard touchdown. Los Angeles took its first lead on Mike Badgley’s 22-yard field goal with 8:56 left. The score was set by Nick Vigil’s recovery of Joe Mixon’s fumble at the Cincinnati 25-yard line moments earlier.

Despite a brave late-game drive from rookie quarterback Joe Burrow, the Bengals’ comeback offer ended when Randy Bullock missed a 31-yard kick with seven seconds left. Burrow, in his NFL debut, went 23 of 36 for 1

93 yards with an interception. He was also intercepted by linebacker Melvin Ingram, who was part of a Chargers defense that kept Cincinnati just 295 yards total. Burrow also rushed for 46 yards which included a 23 yard touchdown that gave the Bengals a 7-0 lead in the first quarter.

After a slow start, the Chargers offense did enough to help Los Angeles leave Cincinnati with victory. Quarterback Tyrod Taylor threw for 208 yards which included 73 yards for tight end Hunter Henry. The Chargers’ offense was led by their new backfield pair of Kelly and Austin Ekeler, who combed out to run 144 yards and a 31-carry touchdown.

Even the Chargers, who have lost 10 games from ball possession in 2019, would not have won were it not for Badgley, who made three of his four field goal attempts.
