“We’re better off now than a couple of months ago, that’s for sure,” Fauci told CNN’s Chris Cuomo Monday night. But the country is not yet where it needs to be, he said.
“We have to flood the test system,” Fauci said.
Several states have hit record levels
Overall cases in the United States are on the rise. The country has reported more than 50,000 cases daily on Friday and Saturday. The last time the United States saw more than 50,000 consecutive cases was in mid-August.
According to data from Johns Hopkins University, at least 22 states are reporting more new cases than the previous week, with many in the Midwest and now increasingly in the Northeast.
Only four states are reporting a decline: Hawaii, Kansas, Missouri and South Carolina. The rest remains stable.
Several states have also reported record highs in the past few days.
In the past few days, several states have reported record numbers.
According to data from Johns Hopkins University, Alaska, Indiana, Kentucky, and Montana reported the highest 7-day averages for new daily cases over the weekend.
Alaska is reporting over 40% more new cases than the previous week. In Kentucky, where Governor Andy Beshear sounded the alarm last week about the “escalation” of cases and urged residents to be on their guard, it announced Monday that the state will increase the application of masks.
“We have to make sure everyone out there is going back to the place where, in your work, you can’t control someone if they’re not wearing a mask, it shouldn’t matter who they are,” he said Monday.
In Wisconsin, new cases average about 2,400 per day, the third highest in the country behind Texas and California. That’s a 15% increase from the state average in the previous week.
What happens when the measurements are relaxed
A new study that analyzed Covid-19 data from all 50 states and DC found that the blockages helped slow the transmission of Covid-19, but the loosened restrictions allowed the virus to spread again.
“Essentially by the time these restrictions were released, those trends reversed,” Dr. Mark Siedner, an investigator in the Division of Infectious Diseases at Massachusetts General Hospital, who led the research team, said in a statement.
But those measures remain a point of contention: many Americans protested against the use of masks, and despite repeated warnings from state leaders, large rallies continued in some parts of the country.
The vaccine could be considered safe next month, Fauci says
U.S. health officials are likely to know whether a Covid-19 vaccine is safe and effective as early as next month, Fauci said Monday.
“I think comfortably around November or December, we will know if the vaccine is safe and effective,” he said.
According to the World Health Organization, there are currently 10 Covid-19 vaccine candidates in large, late-stage clinical trials around the world. Many of these are in the United States and at least two have been trialled in Phase 3 since late July.
And once a vaccine is deemed safe and effective, companies are likely to already have the doses to begin distributing, Fauci said.
“There will probably be vaccines available to some people in limited quantities by the end of this calendar year, early 2021,” Fauci predicted.
Experts including Fauci say health care workers and people with underlying health conditions are likely to have priority for vaccinations.
