Don Lemon supports Jussie Smollett.
The anchor of the 52-year-old CNN stopped by the last episode of Red Table Talk and discussed the recent homophobic and racist attack against the Empire star, in which, according to one source, two men started shouting racist and homophobic insults at Smollett before repeatedly beating him. The men then poured a substance – considered bleach, according to the source – and one of the attackers put a rope around his neck.
"My initial reaction was sadness, I was not shocked, I did not like it to happen," said Lemon, who came out publicly in 2011. "I called because we have friends in common, I received the friend on the phone, the friend talked to me for a minute, the friend says "Jussie is here that sees the doctor." And I talked to Jussie for a minute and then he said : "I have to go, the doctor is here." And it made me sad. "
Lemon remained singularly focused on Smollett's well-being from the attack.
"It is reported that it happened or happened, but my main concern is for him and his well being," said Lemon. "… One, it has to do with discrimination as a black man, so besides that, it has to be gay and it's out, and then fame."
"Fame is not natural, I think people were meant to be famous," he continued. "… When something happens and it's controversial, everyone is coming to get you for you, so I knew everyone would collect his story, not for me, it's not my concern, my concern is for him."
The concern led Lemon to check Smollett every day with text messages.
"So every day I say …" I know you think I'm boring you, but I just want to know how you are and that you're okay and if you need someone you can talk to me because there are not many we out there "revealed Lemon. "Sometimes he answers, sometimes not," he replied and said, "You're not annoying"
Smollett's attack is one of the many things that led Lemon to be frightened in his homosexual life.
"Recently I was scared because of the political environment, I receive death threats … I have security," Lemon said. "All these things happen." Listen, we've always been ideologically divided, but now there's something different. "
Before the last Red Table Talk the show's host, Jada Pinkett Smith, declared to the friend Kevin Frazier why he invited Lemon to the series of watches of Facebook.
"Don [Lemon] is this week, and with all of Jussie Smollett's situation that has occurred, my mother and Willow and I were very interested in the experience of being openly gay, black and male in America ", has explained. "This is a very short list, and the only person I could think of bringing to the table to talk about this experience is Don."
"Don came with so much wisdom and so much information, and he really enlightened me of how it is experience and in a way that I did not understand or really understood before talking with Don", has continued. "I hope people who have family or children, families who are struggling to figure out how to deal with a child who is openly gay, or people who are trying to figure out how to talk about it, will watch the show." 10 PHOTOS
