Elderly couple killed in blaze at high-end Manhattan building



A fire in a high-end apartment building in Midtown killed an elderly husband and wife on Saturday.

The glow broke out in the River House apartment, on the ninth floor of the couple, a 27-story film on East 52nd Street near FDR Drive, around 5:20, police said.

An 85-year-old woman, discovered inside with severe burns, was declared dead on the spot. The 89-year-old husband was rushed to the NewYork-Presbyterian / Weill Cornell Medical Center, where he was also declared dead.

Three firefighters were taken to the NYU Langone Medical Center – two with serious but not fatal injuries, and one with minor injuries, the FDNY said.

Two more firefighters refused medical intervention.

It is believed that the fire was caused by a cigarette, police sources said.
