New York police investigated the bold and fatal shootings of Gambino's criminal boss accused Francesco "Franky Boy" Cali outside his Staten Island home.

Officials who responded to a 911 call Wednesday night found Cali, 53, was hit several times, police said in a statement. A group of emergency doctors rushed him to the Staten Island Universal Hospital, where Cali was pronounced dead.

Federal prosecutors have described Cali as one of the top executives of the infamous Gambino criminal family in New York. His murder marked the most notable killing of a Gambino boss since 1

985, when Paul Castellano was shot dead in front of Sparks Steak House in Manhattan. Cali lived less than half a mile from Castellano's Staten Island villa.

Witnesses told the New York Post and other local media that the bandit fled the scene in a blue pickup.

Cali was a native of Sicily and his wife is the niece of Gambino's boss John Gambino.

The New York Daily News and other media in the city reported that since 2015 Cali had ascended to the top of the gang, even though he never faced a complaining criminal charge.
