Giannis Antetokounmpo of the Bucks has been named NBA MVP for the second consecutive season

Giannis Antetokounmpo and Milwaukee Bucks had a tough time in their second-round streak against the Miami Heat as Jimmy Butler and Co., who were able to take out the East-seeded team in five games. Considering these circumstances, individual honors are probably the furthest thing from anyone̵

7;s mind.

But it’s awards season and prior to Friday’s Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals, Giannis was named NBA MVP for the second consecutive season, as first reported by ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski and subsequently confirmed by the League. He is the first player after Steph Curry in 2015 and 2016 to return one after another, and the 11th all-time to accomplish that feat. Antetokounmpo beat James Harden of the Rockets and LeBron James of the Lakers for the prize.

Aided by the arrival of Mike Budenholzer and his five-out system, Giannis took his game to new heights last season. Then, somehow, he played even better. He scored 29.5 points, 13.6 rebounds – both career highs – 5.6 assists, one steal and one block per game.

Along the way, he took the Bucks to a 53-12 record before the season was suspended, and at one point made them chase the vaunted 70-win club. With Giannis in the lead, Milwaukee was in seventh place in attack and led the league in defense by a wide margin, limiting opponents to 102.5 points per 100 possessions.

For his efforts at that end of the pitch, Giannis was also named Defender of the Year for the first time in his career. With his MVP Award confirmed, he is now only the third player ever to take home both trophies in the same year, joining Michael Jordan and Hakeem Olajuwon.

But as impressive as it is, there is another trophy that Giannis is looking forward to adding to his collection. To get it, he’ll have to lead the Bucks to a comeback worthy of an MVP.
