One of the main reasons
Demarkcus Bowman he chose Clemson was his grandfather. The recent passing of his grandfather, however, meant that Bowman no longer felt comfortable in Tiger Town.
The former potential 5-star candidate entered the NCAA transfer portal on Thursday, a shock to many in the program who hoped the sprinter would revive the thoughts of Clemson’s great CJ Spiller.
However, this week Bowman informed Clemson’s coaches of his transfer intentions.
“The only reason I came to Clemson is because my mom’s dad could watch me play,” Bowman told TigerNet. “He stayed in Atlanta, but he died and that really hurt me. It was my closest family up there and I didn’t feel comfortable anymore. I just want to go to a school closer to home. “
A month later, Bowman’s grandfather also died on his father’s side.
“I started to feel uncomfortable,” Bowman said. “It was uncomfortable being this far from home. So I just wanted to be closer to home.”
As for Clemson, Bowman wanted to thank the Tigers for everything.
“Clemson is a great program,” Bowman told TigerNet. “They have great coaches and academics and it’s literally the perfect place. It just wasn’t for me, though.”
Florida is arguably the leader for Bowman’s services and may be able to play as early as next season. The Gators chased after Bowman heavily and many thought Florida was the leader until Bowman committed to Clemson in May of 2019. Lakeland is just two hours from Gainesville.
Bowman had nine fetches for 32 yards in the first two games of the season. He was rated as the number 2 running back in the class of 2020 by Lakeland High School (Florida).
He rushed for 5,081 yards, including an average of 11.4 yards per carry and 71 touchdowns during his HS career.
For this season and beyond, Travis Etienne is a senior and is expected to turn pro in 2021, with a waiver also available for the current junior Lyn-J Dixon, second year students Michel Dukes is Chez Mellusi, freshman Kobe Pace and senior red t-shirt Darien Rencher. Phil Mafah of Grayson (Ga.) And Will Shipley of Weddington (NC) are committed to the 2021 class at RB.
Head coach Dabo Swinney compared Bowman to Spiller after spring training.
“It’s special. It’s another version of Spiller,” Swinney said. “That’s pretty high praise. It’s a long way from that, but as far as just the high school tape, the explosiveness and the speed of the track – legitimate track speed – the ability to catch the ball … touches it, he can literally go far. He can go back (on special teams) and that kind of thing. I think there are a lot of similarities between the two coming out of high school. He’s probably a little bigger than CJ, but he has that kind of explosiveness and it is easy to see him come out of the system he played in.
