‘I love my 18: 6 intermittent fasting program and have lost 70 pounds. In 8 months

My name is Charmaine Canida (@_coachceecee), and I’m 28 years old. I’m from Houston, Texas, and I’m a case manager and wellness coach. After watching a loved one face health problems due to poor nutrition, I changed my lifestyle by eating a low carb 18: 6 intermittent fasting diet and doing Camp Gladiator training camp workouts.

I have always been overweight and obesity is in my family. Growing up, I was bullied for being overweight, but it just made me want to eat more. I have used food to cope with stress, depression, sadness and anger. Soft drinks and sweets were like my favorite cigarettes or drugs. Whenever I’ve had a bad day, that’s what I wanted.

Fast forward to July 19, 2016: I was sitting on my bed crying uncontrollably over the loss of my grandmother seven months ago. I have been sad and depressed for months. My grandmother had many health complications, many due to her lack of adequate nutrition. I went to doctor’s appointments with her and the doctor begged her to change her diet. She was old and stuck in her ways, so she didn’t. However, it was an awakening for me. If I don’t change, I will follow the same path.

I joined a metabolic program and lost around 80 lbs. But after moving to a bigger city, I got everything back.

It wasn’t until March 2020 that I became consistent with lifestyle changes.

This included how I viewed food. I chose a low-carb, intermittent fasting meal plan because, after trying different methods of losing weight, this combination was the only one I felt I could support for a lifetime.

I fast for 18 hours and eat within a six hour window (an 18: 6 schedule) and usually only eat two meals a day during my feeding window. This is the food method that works for * me *, but you should always consult a dietician or doctor before making any major changes to your diet.

Here’s what I eat in one day:

  • Breakfast: Two eggs and two pieces of bacon or sausage.
  • Lunch: Chicken legs and green beans.
  • Snacks: Rinds.
  • Dinner: Rustic ribs and cabbage.
  • Sweet: Sugar-free cheesecake pudding.

I started training by going to the gym and doing cardio five to seven days a week.

I am now part of a boot camp group called Camp Gladiator which operates on a four week cycle which includes: endurance, strength and agility and interval training. I love the Camp Gladiator community for the support and responsibility I have received from other attendees. Now I also do cardio dance for a more low impact workout.

These three changes also had a huge impact on my overall weight loss.

  • I changed the way I saw food. I had to stop letting my emotions control what I was putting into my body. I really followed the motto that I am “eating to live and not living to eat”.
  • I first focused on understanding my nutrition. I focused on my nutrition before thinking about incorporating my exercise routine. If you don’t consume the proper nutrition, you won’t see results no matter how hard you train.
  • I did it for me. If you are aiming to lose weight, make sure you do it for yourself and your health. Don’t try to lose weight because someone else said you should. This trip is for myself. I set myself small goals and, once they are achieved, I reward myself with something other than food.

I lost 70 pounds in about seven to eight months.

Being able to see my body transform was the most rewarding thing ever. I have several degrees that I have worked hard for, but this weight loss has shown me another level of determination that I never knew I had. I feel much better now.
