State laws against anonymity can help maintain transparency in lottery winnings. For the winner, however, coming forward can be stressful.
"Not only do they have to deal with the stress of a media event and answer questions from a room full of cameras and journalists, but they are also concerned about their safety and the safety of their family," said Jason Kurland, partner of Rivkin Radler, law firm in Uniondale, New York.
The $ 868 million raid marks the second biggest jackpot in the history of Mega Millions. Between this and the first Powerball prize of $ 345 million, a total of $ 1.2 billion is pending winners. The next designs are Wednesday night for Powerball and Friday night for Mega Millions.
