Friday's championship cited a violation of his personal conduct policy "for physical altercations at his residence in Cleveland last February and at a resort in Ohio last June." Hunt will not be paid during the mid-season suspension, which will not appeal.
The league recently completed a survey which included a review of records of the police, video and electronic communications and interviews with witnesses and Hunt, who said he had met Commissioner Roger Goodell the week last.
The 23-year-old said he wants to "apologize again for my actions".
Hunt will be allowed to practice with the Browns through the training camp until the suspension begins August 31
Hunt was released last season from the Kansas City Chiefs after a video emerged and kicked a woman. The footage sparked a public protest and led the Chiefs to cut ties with one of their best players in a Super Bowl push. Hunt later admitted to lying to the leaders.
The Browns signed Hunt in February, saying he was sorry. Director General John Dorsey drafted Hunt while he was in Kansas City and felt that the indigenous of Ohio was contrite and deserved a second chance.
"I know he really did a good job of being busy and doing that job so that it could be the best version of himself," Dorsey said Thursday. "I know he worked diligently on this."
The league said that Hunt said he committed to "available resources" and pledged to honor his obligations.
"I want to apologize again for my actions last year," Hunt said in a statement released by the Browns. "I know my behavior hurts many people, and I apologize to them again. I respect the league's decision on discipline, and I appreciate the time spent with Commissioner Goodell last week. I am grateful for my time with the Browns in the last month and grateful to all the people of the organization who welcomed me.
"I also appreciate all the support I received from my union through this process. My commitment to gaining championship confidence, my teammates, the organization and this community through my actions will continue, and I understand that there is a lot of hard work ahead of me before I can fully return to game I
Hunt's suspension comes during a busy week for the Browns, who acquired stellar receiver Odell Beckham Jr. on Tuesday in a trade with the New York Giants.
The Browns signed Hunt to a one-year contract Feb 11 knowing he was facing a potential long suspension, Dorsey did not excuse Hunt's behavior and said he was willing to help a young man who had made a mistake.
Hunt led the league in running as a debutant with 1,327 yards, scoring eight touchdowns and showing his versatility by taking 53 passes for 455 yards and three TDs. In 11 games last season, he ran for 824 yards and seven touchdowns.
