CLEVELAND – While the Knicks face the prospect of setting a franchise record for 17 consecutive defeats to Monday's "Zion Bowl" against the Cavaliers, rookie Kevin Knox is troubled by the fact that some of the team's fans are no longer bothered. The Knicks coach David Fizdale is also disappointed by the perception that he is training to lose the games to ensure the best odds of winning the lottery, with Duke Mack Truck's main prize called Zion Williamson.
Fizdale said he would never "trick" the game like that.
In the summer, Knox thought the Knicks could contend for the eighth seed and reach the range of 37 wins. -45 – 29 losers of their last 31
"Yes, a lot of fans, they always say stupid things," Knox said during the Quicken early morning shootaround Loans Arena. "You always see him with the tank and he wants to lose things like that. It's a little stupid. They are not really true New Yorkers. Real Knicks fans know that we are only looking for this year to develop only us guys and then next year I hope to make a push. "
In his basketball career, Knox, 19, had never lost more than five games in a row, which arrived in Kentucky last season.
" Every night we will go out and play hard. We're going to compete at the highest level, "Knox said." We could make some mistakes towards the end of the game that costs us games. We are in a lot of close matches with a lot of great teams, playoff teams. This shows you how close we are to winning those games.
"We only need a couple of pieces, it's really good for us young guys to go out there and play against some of these playoff teams and be able to play." "We lose to the Raptors at five, is a playoff team. It's nice to see each other – we're improving every single game. "
In fact, the New York Lottery Police Department has worked overtime this season. But Fizdale said it's crucial to differentiate coaching to lose and train to develop the future.
Of course, Fizdale went to the extreme after the fifth game of the 26-year-old Enes Kanter, probably their most productive offensive player, for the rookie center project Mitchell Robinson. "I think there were actually teams that started playing trying to lose a game," Fizdale said. "This is not in our vocabulary, do we play well every night?" "We do enough to win the game every night, maybe not, but at the end of the day I know these guys are coming out to compete to win."
I listen, so I do not get involved in [the fans’ reactions]. I just think there's a difference between losing games and trying to lose games. That's why I think many people have limited themselves to the idea of, you're just coming in to try and lose a game. You're cheating the game.
The Knicks have not won since they beat Lakers in Los Angeles five weeks ago on January 4th. The Cavaliers are 11-45.
If the Knicks win somehow Monday, they would go from the worst of the championship to the third worst, "ahead" of the Cavaliers and Suns.
In truth, the new lottery format has diminished the motivation to end with the worst record because the top three teams share the same odds for Williamson, at 14 percent. However, the worst record can not get worse than the number 5, which is important in a draft considered superficial.
