Lin-Manuel Miranda did not throw away his shot, and his old English teacher could not be more proud.
In view of the opening of Hamilton in Puerto Rico, the 38 year old – the mind behind the successful musical has chatted with CBS This Morning on Friday and had an emotional reaction to a sweet message from her eighth grade English teacher, Dr. Rembert Herbert.
"Lin, this is your old English teacher, Dr. Herbert, here," Herbert said in a videomessage to his old student. "I'm sure you did not imagine when you were eight years old and you set some The Chosen for the music that would take you where you are today, but congratulations, I've heard a lot about what you're doing in Porto Rico, and I wish you a good job in those efforts and has continued a great success over there. "
Before Herbert pulled out a lot of words, Miranda was already crying to see her beloved teacher on the screen.
"Dr. Herbert is the reason why I'm sitting here talking to you," said a crying Miranda. "I wrote a musical instead of doing homework for his class in eighth grade, he said:" You could be good at that, and you should stop hibernating in my class, and you should do it. " Because we had a theater club written by students in my high school and that of Rembert that pushed me in that direction and he changed my life forever with that. "
Following the interview, Miranda he tweeted kind words from him an old teacher.
"Yes, @CBSThisMorning really brought the aqueduct with the message from Dr. Herbert 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭," he wrote.
Herbert was not the only person to record a message for Miranda! Ingrid Michaelson wished him good luck by quoting his show – "The story has eyes on you", while the original George Washington of Hamilton Christopher Jackson, jokingly scolded Miranda for having made it hard to himself "Many words, remember, you wrote them all", he joked.
Miranda was again in tears from a message from chef Jose Andres.
"Lin-Manuel, congratulations, only you will bring Hamilton to beautiful San Juan, Puerto Rico, for bringing so much hope to the beautiful American people of Puerto Rico," Andres said.
"After all, you know, immigrants do the work," Andres said, referring to a text of the song Hamilton "Yorktown (The World Turned Upside Down).
Miranda was initially Inspired to bring his show to Puerto Rico after doing it with his first musical, In The Heights His motivations have built up after the hurricane Mary devastated the island and Miranda wanted to find a way to help. "19659002]" The conversation immediately became, "How do we help Puerto Rico? How can we leave it a little better than how we found it? & # 39; "Miranda said." We chose, immediately after the hurricane Maria … it was the recovery, the first rescuers, the urgency. And with this campaign, we want to help artists and artistic organizations that are so often forgotten in the reconstruction effort. "
Although he created the iconic musical and role, Miranda himself has not taken a step in the role of Alexander Hamilton in two years.
" Someone asked me, & # 39; E & # 39 ; how to ride a bike? "Miranda said to return to her role." And I said, & # 39; Yes, but it's like riding a bicycle in New York traffic. I know the route. I do not know if anyone will open a cabin for me. But I know the way home. "
Although he has nerves to return to the character, the greatest success came when his son, Sebastian, 4 years old, recently saw and approved the show.
" He had seen the act 1 of the show. He had never seen with me. We talked a lot about Act 2 and how everything is fake. Everything that dad does on that stage is fake. Kissing that lady is fake. Pretending to shoot is pretending, I'm still alive, "said Miranda." And it worked because in the end he craved Donald Weber who plays Burr and that guy shot Dad on stage …. Everything is sauce afterwards. "
