Lisa Kudrow soon became known as Phoebe Buffay Friends. The series turned out to define his career, but Kudrow was a beloved character before taking on the role of a free spirit. Prior to her time on the series, Kudrow played Ursula Crazy about you, and he almost starred in Frasier opposite Kelsey Grammar. Kudrow was originally cast as Roz Doyle, but was fired in favor of Peri Gilpin. His dismissal changed the face of the 1990s television landscape in a significant and beneficial way.

The part required someone with a lot of cheek and Kudrow seemed unable to deliver. She was eliminated from the cast and Peri Gilpin took her place.

While Frasier she continued without Kudrow, she wouldn’t be out of work for long. Frasier premiered its pilot episode on September 16, 1993. Almost exactly a year later, Kudrow made his debut on Friends. The series aired its pilot episode on September 22, 1994. Both shows aired on NBC, although Frasier took a time slot on Tuesday, while Friends aired on Thursdays.

Glipin was actually the original actor envisioned for the role, so it made sense to bring her back. He used a lot of sarcasm to challenge Frasier. Natural chemistry served the series well and helped ensure it was a success.

Over the years, rumors of who almost played Phoebe have made their way onto the internet. According to those rumors, Ellen DeGeneres, Jane Lynch, Kathy Griffin and Megan Mullaly, all tested for the role. DeGeneres and Lynch both said they were never in contention for the series, but Griffin and Mullaly did not comment on the reported near-mistake.

Mullaly seems like the most likely actress to potentially audition for Phoebe. Famous for playing Karen Walker Will and Grace, Mullaly also allegedly auditioned to play Elaine Benes Seinfeld. If she had landed the role of Phoebe, we could assume that her interpretation of the classic character would have been very different from the fickle portrayal of Kudrow.
