Los Angeles lawmaker who was seriously injured in Compton shooting was discharged from hospital, sheriff says

The 24-year-old lawmaker was released on Wednesday and his 31-year-old partner, who helped save his life, remains hospitalized, Sheriff Alex Villanueva said.

“He has a long way to go in recovery. But he is not alone. We, as a community, are in this together”, the sheriff tweeted.

On Wednesday, Villanueva said at a community meeting that one of the deputies was improving and had been moved from the intensive care unit.

“Their prognosis is good, however they have a long road to recovery ahead of them. They will have to go through further surgery to repair all the damage inflicted, but luckily they escaped, you know, a life-altering injury,”

; he said. Villanueva, adding that doctors and surgeons have offered their services to help.

Congressmen were sitting in their vehicle in Compton, California last week when a gunman approached their car and shot them multiple times, the sheriff’s department said.

One of the deputies called for help and applied a tourniquet to his partner as he was bleeding from a gunshot wound to the face, Los Angeles Sheriff and Undersheriff Tim Murakami said earlier this week.

Footage that appears to come from surveillance cameras shows the incident, but investigators have not yet identified a suspect. The detectives “are confident they are on the right track, they are making progress,” Villanueva said Wednesday.

Authorities are offering a reward of up to $ 300,000 consisting of contributions from public funds and several private donors, the sheriff said.

How the attack took place

The shooting took place just before 7pm. Saturday at the MLK Transit Center in Compton, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said.

The gunman approached the passenger side of the deputies vehicle, raised a gun and shot them, Captain Kent Wegener said.

The Sheriff’s Department tweeted the surveillance video of the hitman opening fire and fleeing.

“This is just a grim reminder that this is dangerous work, and actions and words have consequences. Our job doesn’t get easier because people don’t like law enforcement,” Villanueva said. “It pisses me off. It frightens me at the same time.”

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti said it was an “absolute miracle” that the lawmakers survived.

“There is no place in our society for the violence we have seen,” Garcetti said. He described county deputies as guardians of one of the city’s public transit lines.

Both deputies were sworn in 14 months ago, the sheriff said.
