Michelle Obama and the Biggest Surprises at the 2019 Grammys

The Grammys were full of surprises. Some albums and songs that people thought were definitely the winners lost, while some unsuspecting artists brought home the prizes.

But what was perhaps the most shocking aspect of the evening was an appearance of the former First Lady Michelle Obama.

Obama honored the stage with Jennifer Lopez, Lady Gaga, Jada Pinkett Smith and Alicia Keys to talk about the power of music.

"From the Motown discs I have worn out from the south side to the songs of" who manages the world "that fed me in this last decade – music has always helped me to tell my story ̵

"And I know it's true for everyone here. Whether we like the countryside, rap or rock, music helps us to share ourselves – our dignity and sadness, our hopes and our joys. It allows us to feel the other … to invite each other. "

This #BlackHistoryMonth, I am paying tribute not only to the contributions that have been made over the years, but to everyone the story is being done now. In the coming weeks, I will share stories of young people who I met last year, young people who stand on the shoulders of the giants we celebrate this month and are building a legacy of their own. This charming young woman is Alexandra Swain, whom I met when I visited my alma mater, @WhitneyMYoungHS, in Chicago. She is a juniors there, editor of the school newspaper, president of the pretend test team, and a mentor for younger students Outside of the school, she volunteers in a nursing home, in a protection organization of animals and in its local park district, it is making history, day after day, in big and small ways. That gives me hope is that there are millions of young people like Alexandra that makes us proud all over the country. They remind us that much of our history has yet to be written. Now I'll call you to share your stories with #ShareBlackStories. #FlashbackFriday

"Music shows us that all that matters … Every story inside every voice, every note inside every song Is it right sir? "he said.

Obviously the crowd went wild when they saw Obama on stage. But how was this surprise appearance born?

Apparently, it was Keys' idea to host Grammys.

"This was the fruit of Alicia's talent," Lopez told ET's Kevin Frazier. "He wanted to show unity, and he wanted to give good energy and great vibrations at night, and it was a great way to do it."

The appearance was not the easiest thing to pull out. Pinkett Smith said that one of their main concerns was Obama's security.

"We had to keep it low, especially since our first woman was always here," he said. "So, for security reasons, we had to keep it low."

Obama wanted to come to the Grammy to promote unity and felt that this speech was a great way to do it.

"It's beautiful, because that's what art is about." Listen, this is what humanity is talking about, coming together, "continued Pinket-Smith. "We all need one from the other, right? And so it's only about us that we all treat each other with respect and that we join and celebrate all the blessings we all have, no matter what, right? nice to see old friends on stage, you know, all of them, we've known each other for a long time, so that's fine. "

Other surprises

The rest of the night's surprises had more to do with losses and victories than the presences presidential.

The rapper Kendrick Lamar who was a favorite fan to win Album of the Year for the soundtrack Black Panther and was nominated for eight prizes only one at home. And he, Jay Rock, Future and James Blake had to share the prize for the best rap with Anderson Paak who tied for the title.

Drake

What is even more surprising than that of Lamar, is that Drake showed up at the event to accept his award for the best song Rap. Drake has had a long-standing animosity with the award show and even accused them of putting it in a box. Maybe his meat with the Recording Academy is over, but he does not seem too impressed with the award yet.

"You have already won if you have people singing your songs word by word," he told other artists last night. "If you are a hero in your city, if there are people who have a regular job who are going out in the rain, in the snow, spending their hard-earned money to buy tickets to come to your shows, not you need this [ trophy] right here, I promise you, you've already won. "

Lady Gaga

After a star was born everyone had Lady Gaga on their list to win a record or a song of the year. But she did not take home both awards. Instead, the awards went to Childish Gambino.
