The New England Patriots have reached an agreement with free-agent quarterback Cam Newton, bringing the NFL Most Valuable Player in 201

5 to help the team switch from three-time MVP Tom Brady, a person familiar with the agreement told the Associated Press.

The one-year deal is worth up to $ 7.5 million with incentives, the person said, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not allowed to discuss it publicly. A Patriots spokesman said the team had nothing to announce on Sunday evening. The signature was first reported by ESPN.

“I’m as excited as I am not doing it now !!” Newton posted on Instagram “All the praise to God !! Dropping content tomorrow !! Hope you are ready !! Let’sgoPats.”

The Patriots were heading to the training camp with the choice of the draw for the fourth round of 2019, Jarrett Stidham, as the apparent heir to Brady, who has led the six Super League championship team since 2001, but has signed with Tampa Bay in the low season. Stidham appeared in three games last season, completing two passes for 14 yards with an interception.

The only other quarterback with experience in the reigning AFC East champions roster was 34-year-old Brian Hoyer, who started 38 games in an 11-year career with seven NFL teams, including the Patriots twice.

A three-time selection of the Pro Bowl who was the best player in the league in 2015, Newton remains the all-time leader of the NFL in touchdowns that rush from a quarterback. He stayed a year with a five-year contract of $ 103.8 million, but the Panthers saved $ 19.1 million below the salary limit by releasing it on March 24.

31-year-old Newton was first in the 2011 draft after taking Auburn to a national championship and winning the Heisman Trophy. He helped the Panthers reach the playoffs four times, including the Super Bowl in 2015.

The Panthers finished 15-1 that season and Newton won the honors of the MVP championship after launching for 3,837 and 35 touchdowns and running for 636 yards and 10 TD. But he was criticized after Carolina’s 24-10 defeat against the Denver Broncos in the Super Bowl for not jumping on a loose ball at the end of the game and interrupting his post-game press conference.

After losing the post-season in 2016, the Panthers returned after retiring 11-5 the following year, losing to the New Orleans Saints in the joker round. More problematically, a shoulder injury severely hindered its launch in 2018; after starting 6-2, the Panthers lost their next seven games.

Newton underwent surgery to repair a torn rotator cuff before the 2019 season. But he injured his foot in a brief appearance in the third preseason game against New England; he only played two games last season before being placed on an injured reserve with a Lis Franc fracture.

Since then Newton has remodeled, posting several training videos on Instagram. But because of the coronavirus, he hasn’t had a chance to meet other teams to prove he’s healthy.

In nine seasons, he completed 2,371 passes for 29,041 yards and 182 touchdowns with 108 interceptions. He also ran for 4,806 yards and 58 scores.
