Animal Crossing: New Horizons’ first free summer content update will arrive on July 3. Not only will the update bring another returning character, Pascal, it will also introduce the ability to swim and Nintendo has revealed a bit more about how it will work.
Just like in Animal Crossing: New Leaf, you will have to swim in New Horizons. After the summer update, you will find the wetsuits for sale in Nook’s Cranny along with the other tools. After purchasing one, wear it and you can take a dip in the ocean around your island.
While swimming, you will also be able to dive underwater and catch new sea creatures such as starfish and garden eels, which you can then donate to Blathers for exhibit in the museum. If you find a scallop while you dive, the aforementioned Pascal will appear and you can exchange it with him for a new DIY mermaid recipe (and a kernel of otter wisdom).
A second free summer update for New Horizons will arrive this August. Nintendo did not reveal what that update will contain, but the graphics that accompanied the announcement showed fireworks. Longtime Animal Crossing fans will remember that there would be a fireworks display every Sunday evening of August in previous games, so it seems that the fireworks display will also make a comeback.
In the meantime, players from the Northern Hemisphere can still find summer shells, a limited-time seasonal material that can be used to create summer-themed DIY recipes. Nintendo Switch Online subscribers can also request an exclusive free carpet for Animal Crossing.
