Nintendo’s latest Super Mario Bros. game pits you against 34 other Mario’s

The new title for Nintendo Switch is available only from 1st October to 31st March as a free download for Nintendo Online subscribers. After that point, it will no longer be playable.

Taking up the original “Super Mario Bros.”, this new reboot of “35” takes you back to the world of Mario in 1985, with a twist. You will still be able to jump, collect coins and avoid enemies. But this time around, you’ll be playing 34 other Marios and aiming to be the last mustachioed plumber standing, or the one with the most time remaining when the others are up.
With “Super Mario Bros. 35”
; Nintendo has combined Mario nostalgia with the modern online multiplayer battle experience. It is clearly aimed at a new generation of fans and follows a trend that has been accelerated by the huge success of Fortnite.

CNN Business played a few rounds of “Super Mario Bros. 35”. When you perform well and step on enemies, that send enemies to your opponents’ courses and earn you extra time on your watch. At first, opponents fall like flies. But the first few players in a game tend to play for a long time, until all but one fall perhaps by falling into lava or a piranha plant.

The limited-duration approach could potentially stimulate consumer interest in Nintendo Online subscriptions, which cost $ 4 for just one month and $ 20 for 12 months, because, as Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter notes, scarcity generates interest. While the game is free with a subscription, it’s part of a hugely successful franchise and a nostalgic attraction for even the most casual gamers.

Pachter notes that Nintendo had a similar strategy by bringing “classic consoles” back to life for a short period of time: Nintendo sold a limited number of smaller versions of the Nintendo Entertainment system and the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 2016 and 2017.

This isn’t the first time Nintendo has made a battle royale. In 2019 he launched a “Tetris 99” reinvented as a competitive online experience where the last player standing wins. Similar to “Super Mario Bros. 35”, players can attack others by sending them the pieces they don’t want.
