A couple of months have passed since OnePlus released the new OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro and both devices have received numerous software updates that improve the device experience and camera qualities. Today is the time to finally move on to the complete overhaul of both devices, which OnePlus no longer calls “flagship killer”, but rather real flagships.

OnePlus 8, and in particular OnePlus 8 pro, are major redesigns by the company, which significantly increase the level of specifications and features of the phones. OnePlus 8 Pro is essentially a wish list marked with a tick that was missing from last year’s OnePlus 7 Pro, as the company faced some of the biggest criticisms of its predecessors. Starting with the specs, both phones are powered by Qualcomm’s brand new Snapdragon 865 SoC, which means both will offer some of the best performance and experiences you can have on an Android device today. A noticeable difference in hardware specifications is that the regular OnePlus 8 comes with 8/12 GB of LPDDR4X while the 8 Pro comes with 8/12 GB of newer LPDDR5X. It’s an interesting choice, but we will see that the actual end result in terms of performance and efficiency is not exactly what you would expect and is actually negligible. OnePlus is configuring both phones with 128 or 256 GB of UFS 3.0 memory.

The main features of the phones are their new screens. The big change for the regular OnePlus 8 is the fact that it now adds a 90Hz refresh rate to its 2400 x 1080 OLED screen, a feature previously only found on the Pro model. Basically, this brings the high refresh rate feature into the product stack, something we have even seen from other vendors in the high-end or “premium” stack.

The larger OnePlus 8 Pro must of course solve this problem and the 3160 x 1440 OLED screen is now able to offer a 120Hz refresh rate. The big difference for the 8 Pro compared to other 120Hz contenders such as the Galaxy S20 series is the fact that OnePlus allows this refresh rate at the panel’s full native QHD resolution, while Samsung is forcing users to choose between 120Hz and 1440p resolution.

The regular OnePlus 8 comes with a 6.55 “diagonal screen, while the 8 Pro has a slightly larger 6.78” form factor and this is a key differentiator for the fingerprints of the two devices.

A big generational change in the design of the phones is in the configuration of the front camera. Both phones now have a hole for the left corner positioned for the front camera. The cut-out diameter is not very different from what we are seeing on the S20 series, but I find that the positioning of the corners is perhaps less intrusive, and it also allows OnePlus to host a much better (stereo) speaker designed for the headset. compared to the S20 series.

Some people were fans of the OnePlus 7 Pro mechanical pop-up camera, but I was never really convinced of it because of the technical compromises that the phone had to make, especially as regards thickness and weight. OnePlus 8 Pro is now able to use this recovered space for internal components, a larger battery, IP68 protection rating, all while being lighter than the OnePlus 7 Pro – good maneuverability for the pop-up camera.

The rear versions of the phones retain the company’s signature “vertical” central camera configuration, which is actually something rare to see in 2020 since most other manufacturers have opted for a corner camera module layout, to this By the way, even if OnePlus hasn’t changed anything, they stick out.

The normal OnePlus 8 comes with a triple camera configuration among which there are only two “real” modules that can be used daily. The main camera sensor here is the same that we found on the OnePlus 7 series in the form of 48 MP IMX586, accompanied by an ultra wide angle 16 MP module. The third camera is a dedicated 2 MP macro module.

OnePlus 8 Pro significantly updates the capabilities of the camera and this is where the phone competes with the best flagship devices on the market. The new main camera sensor is still 48MP, however it is a new IMX689 in a larger 1 / 1.4 “sensor format, which means that the pixel hue increases from 0.8 µm to 1.12 µm , in fact more than doubling the area per pixel and the sensor, since in addition to doubling the sensor’s light collection capacity.

The wide-angle module has also been significantly updated: it currently uses the same 48 MP sensor that the OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 8 series use for their main cameras, making the UWA 8 Pro among the highest on the market right now.

8 Pro has a quad-camera configuration, 3 of which are usable in daily photography. The third module is the same 3x telephoto lens that we saw on OnePlus 7 Pro. The fourth camera is a 5 MP “color filter module” which is essentially a normal camera with the IR filter removed, which means it can capture camera lengths. IR wave that can give rise to unique looking images, especially in sunlight.

One aspect I wanted to talk a little more about was the ergonomics of the phones, especially their respective sizes, as well as the different screen curvature designs.

The first time I took the regular OnePlus 8 out of the box and held it in my hand, I had something like a revelation, as the phone felt like one of the most perfect form and ergonomics factors I heard in a device for years. The phone looked incredibly premium – and although we’ve had glass sandwiches for years, this has been by far the best feeling glass sandwich to date.

Keeping the OnePlus 8 Pro bigger didn’t have the same answer. In addition to being a little bigger, which is subjective, the curves of the phone weren’t nearly as smooth. The big difference between the two units here is that the 8 Pro shows glass curves on the sides with a much wider radius than the OnePlus 8.

Looking at both phones from the sides it is obvious that the metal side frame of the OnePlus 8 Pro is not actually centered, but actually more recessed towards the rear of the phone. This has a smaller rear glass curvature than the regular OnePlus 8, and I think this makes a fairly big difference in the ergonomics of the two phones.

We have made many experiments with suppliers with curved front glass designs, ranging from the most conservative curves to the most absurd 90 ° ones. In particular, Samsung has attenuated the curvature of the S20 series front glass and has actually been an improvement in the usability and feel of the phone. I think OnePlus 8 Pro also has a similar problem here as its front glass is too curved, while the symmetrical curves of OnePlus 8 feel essentially perfect in the hand.

A difference in the form factor between the two phones besides the footprint is that the OnePlus 8 Pro has a thickness of 0.8 mm. It doesn’t sound much, but it’s actually a 10% difference between the two units and it’s immediately noticeable if you keep them side by side, but it’s not a big inconvenience on its own. The 8 Pro is able to accommodate a larger 4510 mAh battery, a slight impact compared to the 4300 mAh unit of the normal OnePlus 8.

The camera impact of the 8 Pro is also slightly larger than that of the 8. It’s pretty obvious since the metal lip protrudes much more – however I found that, given its central location on the phone, I didn’t actually touch it too often. Oh, and since the cameras are centered, it means that the phone doesn’t swing on a flat surface, which is again a problem for most other 2020 devices.

The two sample units I received were “Glacial Green” flavors, although in practically a lot of lightning conditions these actually appear as light blue. The use of OnePlus of satin matte glass textures on the back of phones with this flavor makes this chromatic choice very simple since it really increases the feeling of the device compared to other glossy finishes.

Overall, I think OnePlus has done an excellent job in terms of the design of the two phones. I have been particularly in love with the regular OnePlus 8 as its form factor and ergonomics are essentially the best I have heard on a phone in a long time.
