Given the differences in approach to their next-generation consoles, the so-called “console war” between Sony and Microsoft is questionable. However, most console gamers will have to make a choice between PS5 and Xbox Series X.
And it would appear that the PS5 is coming out on top. This is because data collected by SimilarWeb and relayed to TNW showed that there is a stark difference between the number of people visiting playstation.com and xbox.com when the console pre-orders were released.
According to the data, when PS5 pre-orders were released on September 1
Pre-orders for all three consoles sold out quickly and it’s still a challenge to find a reseller that has some availability.
But it seems Sony has the edge over the number of people who appear to be after its next-gen console. There is a nuance here, as people split between PS5 and Xbox Series X may have chosen Sony’s machine because it was the first to bring its pre-orders to life.
The PS5 also has a digital edition – which offers all the power of the standard PS5 but removes the disc drive – which reduces the $ 499 Xbox Series X with a price tag of $ 399. So the digital edition may have tempted people to choose a PS5.
That said, Sony has sold far more PS4 consoles than Microsoft with Xbox One. So actually, Sony has a larger core of PlayStation gamers to take with them to the next generation of consoles. Arguably, it’s not surprising that the PS5 is getting more attention than its Xbox rival.
Still, it’s interesting to see the Xbox Series X get so much attention, as its brand pull is arguably smaller than PlayStation’s. Undoubtedly, Microsoft’s approach to giving the Xbox Series X the maximum possible power – 12 teraflops compared to the PS5’s 10.28 teraflops – has helped attract fans of the console. And having the cheapest $ 299 Xbox Series S can’t hurt, as that machine offers alternative options for people who don’t want to spend nearly $ 500 on a gaming gadget.
With the Xbox consoles launching on November 10 and the PS5 launching on November 12 in the US, we’ll soon see which one comes out on top. But it would appear that both console brands could be on a winner.
