‘Ratched’ star Sarah Paulson in ‘The Hardest Thing [She’s] Never done’

Sarah Paulson currently plays Nurse Mildred Ratch in the narratively previous Netflix origin story Someone flew over the cuckoo’s nest. In the Ryan Murphy series, he plays a character often considered evil and amoral. It brings the necessary three-dimensionality to Nurse Ratched and reveals part of the mystery inherent in the woman.

Paulson is a Ryan Murphy fan, and Ryan Murphy is evidently a fan of his. The two have worked together many times – American Horror Story, American Crime Story, etc. However, for all the difficult characters Paulson had to convincingly embody in Murphy’s twisted and treacherous tales, the “hardest thing” he faced happened behind the camera.

Sarah Paulson on “American Horror Story” direction

Sarah Paulson and Tracee Ellis Ross sat down for Variety’s Actors on Actors to discuss their careers. They noted the similar paths they followed, as well as the overlapping artistic opportunities that presented themselves. Tracee Ellis Ross was quick to ask Paulson: “What was it like to direct American horror story? “Paulson went on to explain why it’s quite challenging for her.

This was the hardest thing I’ve ever done because it was personally very challenging for me. Why, I have had to struggle with the fact that I, by nature, am in a panic. And the only thing you don’t want from your director is looking at someone, their eyes narrowing with some kind of abject terror.

Paulson was asked to direct a different episode of “AHS” than she expected

Paulson told Ross that her expectations for her first directing gig were violated.

Part of what happens American horror story is that our scripts are very close to when we are shooting. And I should have directed episode 8 of the show. And I got a call from Ryan saying, “Please direct the return to Murder House episode “, which is basically returning to the first season …”

Paulson explained his excitement at the possibility of directing all these talented actors – Kathy Bates, Jessica Lange, Emma Roberts and others – yet he had little or no time to prepare. She was largely involved in the previous episodes, so she had to go from heavy performing to behind-the-camera work, in an episode she never thought she’d direct.

Paulson explained that she was “very present” at the time and “terrified”. She was “aware” that she was terrified, as Ellis Ross explained to Tracee. He longed to communicate with the actors in a way that was useful and felt the associated pressure. However, despite all the internal terror that preceded the experience, she said she would like to direct again.
