Here is today’s COVID-19 update from the County Health and Human Services Agency with data through October 16.

Status metrics:

  • According to state tracking metrics, San Diego County remains in Tier 2, also known as the Red Tier.
  • The adjusted case rate calculated by the state of San Diego is 6.8 per 100,000 residents, compared with 6.5 in the previous assessment. The limit for level 2 is 7.0.
  • The test positivity rate is 3.0%, down from 3.5% last week, placing it in Tier 3 or Tier Orange.
  • The state health equity metric examines test positivity for areas with the lowest health conditions. This metric does not move counties to more restrictive levels but is required to advance.
  • The county̵
    7;s health equity test positive rate is 5.7, down from 6.2% reported on Oct.6.
  • The California Department of Public Health will assess the counties weekly, with the next report scheduled for Tuesday, October 20.

Community setting hotbeds:

  • Two new community outbreaks were confirmed on October 16, both in corporate settings.
  • In the last seven days (10-16 October), 38 community outbreaks have been confirmed.
  • The number of outbreaks in the community remains above the limit of seven or more in seven days.
  • A community-based outbreak is defined as three or more cases of COVID-19 in one environment and in people from different families in the past 14 days.

Testing:

  • 19,423 tests were reported to the county on Oct.16, and the rate of new laboratory-confirmed cases was 1%.
  • The 14-day moving average percentage of positive cases is 2.7%. The target is below 8.0%.
  • The daily average of 7-day tests is 10,236.
  • People with and without symptoms who are at a higher risk of COVID-19 should be tested. Healthcare and essential workers should also undergo a test, as well as people who have had close contact with a positive case or who live in communities who are severely affected.

Cases:

  • 201 new cases were confirmed among San Diego County residents on October 16. The region’s total is now 51,982.
  • 3,752 or 7.2% of cases required hospitalization until October 16.
  • 869 or 1.7% of all cases and 23.16% of hospitalized cases had to be admitted to an intensive care unit.

Deceased:

  • Three new deaths from COVID-19 were reported in San Diego County on October 16. The region’s total is now 853.
  • Three men died between August 26 and October 16, and their ages ranged from the early 1930s to the mid-1980s.
  • Two of the three had underlying medical conditions.
