Scientists warn Earth’s magnetic North Pole has begun moving ‘erratically’



The Earth's magnetic field is what allows us to exist. It carries harmful radiation. It keeps our water and atmosphere on the spot. But now he is acting – and nobody knows why.

Planet Earth is alive. Deep under his skin, his vital blood – rivers of molten iron – pulsed around its core. And this mobile iron is what generates the magnetic field that causes the aurora ̵

1; and keeps us alive.

But according to the scientific journal Nature, something strange is happening in depth.

It is causing the magnetic North Pole to & # 39; skitter & # 39; far from Canada, in the direction of Siberia.

On January 30 (delayed due to the closure of the US government), the World Magnetic Model – which governs modern navigation systems – is subjected to an urgent update.

This model is a vital component of systems ranging from lift systems used to navigate ships up to smartphone trackers and maps.

The current model had to be valid until 2020. But the magnetic pole began to move so rapidly, it was realized in 2018 that the model had to be repaired – now.

"They realized that it was so inaccurate that it was going to exceed the acceptable (safe) limit for navigation errors," Nature Reports.

FICKLE TIDES

Every year, geophysicists from the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the British Geological Survey check how the Earth's magnetic field is changing.

This is necessary because the liquid iron that agitates in the Earth's core does not move coherently

But the movement of the north magnetic pole has been the object of study since 1831. Initially, it was traced moving into the Arctic Ocean at a speed of about 15 km each year. But, starting in the mid-1990s, he took speed.

It is now moving at a speed of about 55 km in the year.

But another recent study revealed that the Earth's magnetic field has been operating for about 1000 years now.


CORE OF THE MATTER

Because the magnetic field is moving so dramatically is unknown.

"Geomagnetic impulses, like the one that happened in 2016, could be traced back to hydromagnetic waves" that arise from the core, "says nature. "And the fast movement of the magnetic north pole could be connected to a high-speed jet of liquid iron beneath Canada".

This fast flowing molten river seems to weaken the magnetic influence of the iron core under North America.

"The position of the magnetic north pole seems to be governed by two large-scale magnetic fields, one below Canada and one below Siberia," Phil Livermore of the University of Leeds told a meeting of the American Geophysical Union. "The Siberian patch is winning the competition."

And since global warming opens more shipping lanes to the north of Russia and Canada, this presents a potentially deadly problem.

"The fact that the pole is going fast makes this region more prone to big mistakes," says Arnaud Chulliat, geomagnetist of the University of Colorado, Boulder and NOAA.
