LOS ANGELES – Simon Cowell underwent surgery to repair a broken back, the result of an electric bicycle accident, and was recovering in a hospital, a spokesman said Sunday.
“Simon broke his back in several places” after falling off the new bike he was testing Saturday in the backyard of his Malibu home, the rep said. Family members were present.

Despite the ordeal, he has gathered strength to send a “huge thank you” to the doctors and nurses who treat him. Cowell, known for his harsh comments on competitors, also shared some tips.
“If you buy an electric trail bike, read the manual before using it for the first time,” he tweeted Sunday evening.
The couple’s son and Silverman’s son from a previous marriage were with Cowell when the accident occurred. Cowell’s injury will force him to miss the start of this season’s live shows on NBC’s “America’s Got Talent.” Live shows will begin Tuesday and Wednesday without him, the network said.
He created the talent show, now in its fifteenth season, and serves as a judge. The other judges of the show are Heidi Klum, Howie Mandel and Sofia Vergara, with Terry Crews as the host.
