An offensively dominant second bout, coupled with a robust defensive third, allowed the Dallas Stars to take a 1-0 Series lead over the Tampa Bay Lightning in Saturday’s Stanley Cup final. Tampa Bay simply wasn’t able to convert any of their many chances in the final period – including multiple power plays – leading to a 4-1 star win.

It was far from the most exciting start of the match as each team seemed to shake off the nerves that come with playing in a league series. The stars were able to get composure first, get a strong forecheck and force an expensive Tampa Bay turnover to give Joel Hanley a chance to score the first goal of the series. Lightning̵

7;s opening was a little less convincing, with a shot that bounces off a defender’s skate and hits the back of the net to tie things up with a goal each.

Dallas dominated the second period, keeping the lightning bolt on his heels and putting two goals behind Andrei Vasilevskiy for a 3-1 lead in the final period. It was then that Tampa Bay began to take things more seriously on the offensive side, but ultimately the attempts did not produce anything tangible. Anton Khudobin, who had never started a playoff match before this season, served as the impenetrable force that the Lightning were unable to overcome to even get a goal on their opponents.

The story of Cinderella of Dallas is now three games away from its fairytale ending, and the franchise’s first title since 1999. The Lightning will need a strong response in Game 2 before it unravels into another post-season failure.
