TB confirmed in Provine High School student, health officials say



State officials are testing Provine High School students and faculty after a student has been diagnosed with an active tuberculosis case, authorities said. The Mississippi Department of Health officials are working with school leaders to identify students and staff who may have been exposed to TB. About 200 students and staff members will be tested in the coming weeks, MSDH officials said. "They will be alerted with a letter detailing the upcoming tests: Tuberculosis tests are only recommended for people notified by the MSDH," health officials said in a press release. "The risk of infection from this diagnosed case is minimal.The most common way to contract tuberculosis is to have direct and extensive contact with someone who has an active tuberculosis disease." Tuberculosis is an infection of the respiratory tract that It spreads when a person inhales germs in the air for a long time in a restricted area with someone who has active disease, health officials said. Symptoms of active TB include persistent cough, blood cough, night sweats and weight loss. MSDH will hold a meeting with parents from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm Thursday at the Provine High School auditorium to provide information and answers to the questions.
