A monstrous kindergarten teacher in China was sentenced to death for poisoning 25 children – one of whom died – with breakfast porridge laced with sodium nitrite as revenge after an argument with a colleague, according to reports.
The Jiaozuo court on Monday described kindergarten teacher Mengmeng Wang Yun as “despicable and evil” for putting the toxic compound in children’s food, the Global Times reported.
“She should be punished severely in accordance with the law,” said the Intermediate People’s Court ruling on the macabre March 27, 2019, incident after she and another teacher had “quarreled over student management issues,”
Sodium nitrite, which is often used as a food additive for seasoning meat, is a highly toxic substance that is also found in fertilizers, ammunition and explosives. In high quantities, it can prevent the body from absorbing oxygen properly.
One parent told state-owned Global Times tabloid that he rushed to kindergarten after receiving a phone call that his son threw up and passed out, CNN reported.
“The vomit was all over (in their) pants. There were also other children who were vomiting and looking pale, ”said the father, surnamed Li, according to the report.
One of the poisoned children died in hospital 10 months after the poisoning, the BBC reported.
“The children said the porridge tasted salty,” a parent told Beijing News, according to the Global Times.
The court said Wang also used sodium nitrite, which she bought online, on her husband after an argument in 2017. In that incident, she sustained minor injuries when she drank from a cup.
Wang is expected to die from lethal injection or firing squad.
