This is the terrifying moment when a diver came face to face with a mysterious 30-foot "sea snake" similar to a giant condom.
Ben Laurie, 21, met the strange creature while diving near Cape Brett in New Zealand North Island.
Ben, from Kerikeri, New Zealand, said: "We were diving there for the kingfish and we had a couple plugged in, and then we were climbing from one of the dives when my friend saw this thing. CLICK ON THE ONLY FOR MORE
"It looked like a great condom. It was 10 meters (about 33 feet) long and almost half a meter (1.6 feet) wide, and it barely flowed with the tide. "
Ben, who has years of experience in the water and is an ambassador for WildBlue's dive shop, said he had not seen anything like this
He added:" I did not know what it was at that time so it was quite a confusing thing.
"We get these little ones like the plankton -ups: they are like little things stacked but they are only like 20 cm (7.8 inches) – so I thought it was just one of them.
" But one of the guys he touched it and said it was not soft at all, it was more like a sort of cardboard texture. "
In fact, it is believed that the creature is a pyrosome – a floating colony made up of billions of shouts di mare
It feeds by filtering the microscopic plant cells from the sea, with every sketch drawing water from the outside of the pyrosome and then releasing the filtered water inside the colony.
He said : "Apparently they come only from depths of 2,000 meters (about 6,500 feet), so it's quite rare that they are in the shallows this way.
"It must have been sick or something …
" Once it gets a little too high, because it has a softer consistency, the fish seems to eat it, so that's why it stays deep. "
In any case, Ben knows he was lucky enough to make such a unique sighting.
Ben said that a scientist told him it was" a unique rarity "The thing to see."
