Atlantic magazine raised eyebrows on Friday when it ran an article calling for the abolition of the Nobel Peace Prize after President Trump was nominated for the prestigious honor.
The president’s name was presented for the 2021 award by Norwegian parliamentarian Christian Tybring-Gjedde, who cited Trump’s role in mediating a peace agreement between Israel and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Trump has since won a second nomination from Swedish lawmaker Magnus Jacobsson for overseeing an economic deal between Kosovo and Serbia.
The nominations, however, apparently did not fit well with the liberal magazine, which said on Friday that “peace had its chance, and it blew it.”
ANONYMOUS SOURCES IN DONALD TRUMP’S ATLANTIC BOMB REQUIRE RECORD
“If Trump wins the award, it will be the fourth Nobel Prize awarded for peace between Israel and its neighbors,” Atlantic Staff writer Graeme Wood wrote. “This will make Arab-Israeli peace mediators more effective in captivating the Nobel Committee than the International Committee of the Red Cross, which has won three times in the 120-year history of the award, but still less successful than my favorite, which it’s none at all.
“Not giving the Peace Prize to anyone is a tradition that the Nobel Committee should revive, perhaps on a permanent basis,” Wood added. “The achievement record of peace winners is so uneven and the reasons for their awards so eclectic, that the committee should take a long pause to consider whether peace is a coherent enough category to be worth acknowledging. Peace he had his chance, and blew everything. Trump’s nomination … helps show why. “
Wood described Tybring-Gjedde’s appointment of Trump as “absurd”, saying that “the president’s main diplomatic ploy is to adopt a lick attitude towards authoritarians, promising them decades in power in exchange for a smile and a condominium development. Peace does not mean a network of personal agreements between rich psychopaths. “
“At this point the contradictions of the peace prize should be evident,” he added. “Is it given for peace, or for voices of peace? Do you deserve a prize for keeping despots, as long as the despots are part of a stable network? Is it given for accidentally destroying a large army – or only if the destruction is intentional ? What if you do all the right things, but are you a villain or an alleged rapist? “
Wood argued that the Peace Prize is more “subjective” than the other Nobel Prize winners, stating that 1973 winner Henry Kissinger ended and started “a lot of conflict” and noting that 2009 winner Barack Obama refused to meet the dictator. North Korea’s Kim Jong Il and expanded the drone program, adding that the 44th president “won for his promotion, particularly not for his success in achieving” cooperation between peoples “.”
MSNBC, CNN FOR THE MAJORITY IGNORES MAJOR PEACE AGREEMENT BY TRUMP ISRAEL-UAE DURING PRIMETIME
“All of this points to one of two conclusions,” Wood said. “The Nobel Committee can award the prize to charities such as the Red Cross or Doctors Without Borders … or it can keep the award hidden for a while and reevaluate its reasoning for a modern era.
“I suspect that reassessment will end, if the committee is honest, with the admission that peace can only be recognized by its fruits, which take decades to ripen, and not its seeds. Continuing to award seed awards is embarrassment in court and take hostage to extravagant nominations in search of attention like Trump’s. Better shut it down, before the trolls do. “
The article was received with disbelief and criticism on social media.
“I don’t expect the media to like Trump and not care about the Nobel Prize, but the hostility here is discrediting,” RealClearInvestigations senior writer Mark Hemingway reacted.
“The liberal media is having a mental breakdown over Trump’s two Nobel Peace Prize nominations,” tweeted NewsBusters analyst Nicholas Fondacaro.
“It’s a parody story,” asked Josh Hammer, Newsweek opinion editor.
TRUMP NOMINATED TO NOBEL PRIZE FOR PEACE BY A NORWEGIAN OFFICIAL, ISRAEL-UAE PEACE CITING AGREEMENT
“That’s silly. Trump does something worthy, so the whole system has to be burned?” tweeted Erielle Davidson, a senior policy analyst at the Jewish National Security Institute of America.
“I thought people were trolling the Atlantic when they said they were calling for an end to the Nobel Peace Prize in response to Trump’s nomination for 2, but alas, no: that’s true,” Daily Wire contributor Harry Khachatrian said.

The Atlantic recently spawned headlines with its explosive reports that alleged President Trump disparaged fallen WWI soldiers buried at the American Aisne-Marne cemetery near Paris as “suckers” and described the cemetery as “full of losers “during a trip to France in 2018.
President Trump, as well as current and former members of his administration, have vehemently denied the Atlantic news.
