The best laptops for students

With all that in mind, we have chosen our new favorite laptops for students. They are all easy to transport, have exceptional keyboards, good performance and last all day. Not everyone will need an extremely robust machine to return to campus – some of you will find a Chromebook or even a 2 in 1 tablet sufficient. Those who need more power for graphics or video editing will appreciate the fact that our choices enclose the muscle you will need in frames that will not weigh down your backpack.

Dell XPS 1

The laptop

What else can we say? We’ve already hailed last year’s XPS 13 as the perfect ultraportable, and this year’s model managed to improve it. It features a taller and larger screen so you can see more of your essay simultaneously, plus a larger keyboard and trackpad. The XPS 13 2020 manages to have a more elegant design than its predecessor, so it fits perfectly in your bag.

The laptop also offers the same reliable performance and excellent battery life that we expect from XPS machines. Stay away from the base model, as it uses a less powerful Core i3 chipset and a paltry 4 GB of RAM. We recommend the $ 1,199 version with its tenth generation of Intel Core i5 and 8 GB of RAM. If you are looking for a versatile and versatile machine, the XPS 13 2020 is the best solution.

If you want a better keyboard and something with a more elegant appearance, consider Surface Laptop 3. The Microsoft notebook line has a crisp design, fast performance and an excellent keyboard and trackpad. Seriously, you’ll love writing on those soft, deep keys, and the Alcantara fabric that covers the deck will look like a luxurious rug for your palms.

The 15-inch model in particular offers a ton of power while maintaining an elegant profile thanks to its AMD processor. You will have to live without an SD card reader and an HDMI socket, but the USB-C and A options are a good basis. Plus, you’ll enjoy watching Laptop 3’s big and beautiful screen while zooming in on As. Surface Laptop 3 is a great notebook for anyone looking for a modern, good-looking device.

Apple MacBook Air

And those of you who prefer Macs? Apple has updated its Air and Pro lines this year with improved keyboards, making them easier to recommend. Previous generations are difficult to write, as the keys often stick or break.

Now that the typing experience has improved significantly, the MacBook Air is a great laptop for everyday use, thanks also to its excellent performance, respectable battery life and crisp Retina display. It is also a much better value now that the starting price is lower and the basic specifications are more generous. There is also a handy fingerprint sensor for access. Those who have more money to spare should consider the 13-inch Pro for its better performance, especially if you plan to edit videos or play games. However, it is important to note that Pro complements Intel’s Iris Plus graphics. It’s fine for light gaming, but for more serious tasks like 3D rendering of the 16-inch Pro with discrete GPUs it would be better.

Samsung Galaxy Book Flex

The laptop

There are few laptops on the market that are as beautiful as Samsung’s latest Galaxy notebooks. The Galaxy Chromebook, for example, must be the most attractive laptop I have ever gotten my hands on. The Galaxy Book Flex has exactly the same gorgeous aesthetic, except in a less bold, but still unique blue tone.

Despite being incredibly thin and light, the Flex packs a powerful 10th generation Intel Core i7 processor, a comfortable keyboard with ample travel, and even an S Pen. With this stylus, you can take class notes, draw molecular diagrams or sign documents with ease. The QLED screen is also gorgeous and you can use an Outdoor mode to increase brightness when needed. Flex’s 13.5-hour battery life is also impressive for its size and beats most notebooks on this list.

The main disadvantage of Book Flex is that you can only get it with a Core i7 and 8 GB of RAM for $ 900. There is no other configuration. It’s actually quite affordable compared to Apple’s MacBooks, but those with limited budgets may want to skip this and consider the Galaxy Book Flex Alpha cheaper.

Microsoft Surface Go 2

tablet

Maybe you don’t even have the space for a laptop in your life and you just need occasional access to a proper keyboard. So a tablet with a keyboard like Surface Go 2 might be enough. It’s a cute little 10.5-inch whiteboard with an integrated easel and runs Windows 10 so you can use all the desktop apps you need. It starts at a relatively affordable price of $ 400, although this only gives you an Intel Pentium Gold processor and 4 GB of RAM. If you need more power, you may want to upgrade to a Core M3 model with 8 GB of RAM, which will cost $ 730 (with integrated LTE).

We also recommend getting the keyboard cover, as Windows isn’t the best tablet operating system. It will cost you $ 100 more, bringing your total to $ 500 or $ 830 depending on your configuration. Despite its small size, Go 2 lasts longer than a working day and should survive an entire morning and afternoon of lessons without needing a charge.

Apple iPad Air

tablet

Those who don’t care about a more tablet-like operating system might find a suitable option in the iPad Air 2019. It’s not as powerful as the iPad Pro, but starts at $ 499 much cheaper. For this, you will get a nice 10.5-inch Retina display, good battery life and a robust app ecosystem. The iPad Air is compatible with Apple’s Smart Keyboard, so you can use it as an aspiring laptop and send emails or quick messages to your professors.

Air’s A12 Bionic processor may not be the fastest Apple chip around, but it’s still very fast. iPadOS now acts more like a desktop operating system so you can edit text more intuitively, save files on your device and finally pair a mouse for more precise navigation. Art students may want to consider buying the Apple Pencil as well, since Air is a nice canvas to draw on. Those who want a better tablet in all may want to consider the iPad Pro, but those who are budget conscious will be satisfied with what Air offers for the price.

Lenovo Flex 5 Chromebook

Lenovo Flex 5 Chromebook

Nathan Ingraham / Engadget

Not all students require a full-fledged laptop for school – some do most of their work through a browser. If it sounds like you, consider a Chromebook. They have matured in the last year both in terms of design and performance. The latest Chromebooks come with more powerful guts and more elegant finishes while costing hundreds less than their Windows and Mac counterparts.

Our choice of Chromebook is Lenovo’s Chromebook Flex 5, for its robust yet elegant construction, solid battery life and capable performance for the price. It only costs $ 410 on Amazon and offers the Intel i3 core and a 360-degree hinge. We also like the comfortable keyboard and the nice screen here. The 4 GB of RAM in the Flex 5 packages are somewhat miserable, but considering that you’re only running Chrome OS, that amount of memory is enough.
