The International Space Station gets its first space refrigerator



Being an astronaut is great as long as you don’t mind sucking your dinner out of a bag and munching freeze-dried ice cream, as fresh foods traditionally lacked the necessary multi-year stability. Thankfully, the days of rehydrated snacks will soon be over thanks to an ingenious refrigeration system from the University of Colorado, Boulder, nicknamed Freezer fridge Incubator Device for Galley and Experimentation (aka FRIDGE).

The units were designed by BioServe Space Technologies at UCB and are the size of a standard microwave oven. “There are no rotating parts, no fans, which is really important for reliability,”

; Robby Aaron, an aerospace masters student working on the project, said in an April press statement. “A normal refrigerator on Earth is also hot in the back. We can’t have it in space. Hot air does not increase in conditions of microgravity; it stays still and can cause things to overheat, so you have to get rid of the heat in another way. The ISS has a water cooling system in which we will be involved to directly discharge the waste heat and keep the system cool. “
