Trump cited recent reports that Tehran is considering an assassination attempt on Lana Marks, the US ambassador to South Africa. US officials have been aware of the threats against the ambassador since the spring, but intelligence suggests those threats have become more specific in recent weeks.

An intelligence source told Fox News that the intelligence community is taking the threat against the ambassador seriously and believes the Iranian regime has the potential to act on a murder plot. The Pentagon said Soleimani “was actively developing plans to attack American diplomats and service members in Iraq and throughout the region.”
