Willow Smith sent a strong message to dad Will Smith when she shaved her head on her “Whip My Hair” tour. In a 2020 interview, Will explained how he wasn’t really listening to his daughter’s unhappiness for being on tour until he got her attention by cutting her hair.
Will Smith had an energy that “set my family on fire”
During an appearance on HBO Sport’s The non-stop shop, Will discussed how he had moved through his life with a very rigid mindset he had learned as a child.
“And, you know, for a full 15 years of my life, I just set my family on fire with that energy,” Will said. “Because part of what I wanted wasn’t just me – I wanted my kids to do it, I needed my wife to do it, and only my family was unhappy.”
It was Willow who made it clear that she needed to put an end to that way of thinking. “Willow hit me hard,” he explained.
“So he’s 9, with a single in the top 10 … and before that, only Michael Jackson and Stevie Wonder had done that at that age,” Will said. He believed he was winning at the parenting game based on his success, so when she told him “Dad, I’m ready to go home” after opening for Justin Bieber in Dublin, he was confused.
“I was like, ‘No baby, you can’t go home, you have to finish the tour.’ She’s like, ‘Yeah dad, I’m done,'” he said.
“But you can’t finish … you promised Mr. Jay-Z that you would do the 30 days,” Will continued. “And she was like, ‘No daddy, you Mr. Jay-Z promised. ‘”
Will Smith learned a huge lesson from Willow
Will was blinded by his son’s success and couldn’t understand why she would want to leave since his professional guidance always made him strive to be number one.
He shared that the moment Willow shaved her head that night, it became very clear to him.
“She came down that morning and had her bald head shaved off … in the middle of her ‘Whip my Hair’ tour,” explained Will. “Hey, I was like, ‘Wow!,’ And she taught me such a valuable lesson.”
“I thought, ‘Baby I get it. We can go home,” she said.

Jada Pinkett Smith also understood its significance
During the October 13 episode of Red Table Talk, Jada Pinkett Smith and guests discussed the mom’s shame they felt and the actor said that when Willow shaved her head, “there was a firestorm.”
According to Jada, however, none of the criticisms mattered because of what he witnessed.
“When people say ‘I can’t believe you shaved Willow’s head’, if they could have seen this little girl’s expression of freedom, watching her hair fall to the ground,” Jada explained.
Seeing her daughter’s reaction to that moment of power has definitely calmed any outside control.
“So I as a mom watching that, experiencing that with her, there’s nothing anyone can tell me to tell me it was wrong,” explained Jada. “Not a person, because I was there, I was looking at her, I saw her face, I knew the journey she and I took together to get to that point. And so it didn’t really matter what other people said. “
