The “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” celebrates 30 years since its premiere with an unscripted special scheduled for Thanksgiving on HBO Max.
Will Smith shared a glimpse of the moment with two reunion snaps on her Instagram, and the second certainly caught everyone̵
7;s attention. In it, Smith could be seen laughing and smiling with the former co-star Janet Hubert.
For the uninitiated, this is a file huge deal. The series’ original Aunt Viv, Hubert left the show after three seasons due to her public aversion to her protagonist, an aversion that echoed in subsequent years.
In fact, only in 2011, Hubert said TMZ that he would never attend a meeting “as I will never do anything with an asshole like Will Smith”, calling him a “self-centered” who “hasn’t grown up”.
“This … reunion thing is never going to happen in my life unless there’s an apology,” she said. “Who doesn’t know the word.” Could an apology be part of their conversation?
The first image showed Smith, Tatyana Ali, Alfonso Ribeiro, Karyn Parsons, Joseph Marcell, Daphne Maxwell Reid (second aunt Viv) and even DJ Jazzy Jeff.
“Today is exactly 30 YEARS since the @FreshPrince of Bel-Air debuted! So we’re doing something for you … a real Banks family reunion is coming to @HBOmax soon!” Smith captioned his post, including a tribute to the late James Avery, who played his uncle Phil.
That reunion is an unscripted special for the show’s anniversary due to streamer from Thanksgiving. Although it is not yet clear how the meeting will be structured, however Deadline Describing it as “a night of music, dancing and surprise guests,” it seems that at least fans will see Smith and Hubert, hopefully, talk about things.
Upon his departure, Smith suggested that ego was a factor, joking in interviews that he wanted it to be the “Aunt Viv of Bel-Air” show. She insisted it just wasn’t true, insisting that she was always a pro on set.
In 2016, as covered later by Us Weekly, Hubert said that at least part of the problem was that Smith was unwilling to help the rest of the cast fight for more in their contract negotiations, presumably telling them, “My deal is my deal, and you all deal is. your all business. “
He told “The Real” that same year that, in 2009, he was asking Smith, through his manager, to at least be honest about his behavior on set after he smeared it in the press years ago.
Hopefully this conversation between the two will heal as Hubert was a huge part of the show’s success. Sure fans were thrilled to see her represented, while “Aunt Viv” was trending on Twitter for their excitement.
