About 12 hours after wrapping up a long day with interviews praising their choice in the first round, the Detroit The Red Wings embark on an intense Day 2 of the 2020 NHL draft.

The Wings have nine picks in rounds 2-7 (11:30 am, NHLN), three of them in the second round.

“We know we have work to do,” said amateur scouting director Kris Draper. “We also realize that a big part of us going back to where we want to go will be designing and developing.

“We can’t wait to make these choices.”

The Wings have choices at 32, 45, 55, 63, 65, 107, 125, 156 and 187.

They used 32nd pick on Swedish defender William Wallinder, a 6 foot 4, 191 pounds who plays for MODO. He is a bearer of movable discs with one eye to create offense.

While on the clock for the 45th pick, the Wings traded it to the Los Angeles Kings for picks 51 and 97. The Wings used the 51st pick on Theodor Niederback, a Swedish center playing in the Frolunda system. He’s 5-11, 172, and shoots well.

Tuesday, they chose Swedish winger Lucas Raymond in fourth place overall.

The project will be held practically this year due to the new coronavirus pandemic. The teams are placed in home bases; in the case of the Wings, Draper and staff, including assistant general managers Pat Verbeek and Ryan Martin and amateur scout leader Jesse Wallin, are in a conference room at the Little Caesars headquarters.

General Manager Steve Yzerman is working remotely because he was recently exposed to a person who tested positive for COVID-19. Yzerman tested negative several times.
