The New York Yankees and Tampa Bay Rays will open their best-of-five American League Division series on Monday night at Petco Park in San Diego. The two rivals from AL East meet for the first time ever in the playoffs. Last week the Yankees took over Cleveland in the Wild Card Series to advance. The rays swept the blue jays. A trip to ALCS is now planned.

There is certainly no love lost in this series. The Yankees and the Rays have long had bad blood, with their regular season matches that have featured numerous bench clearing incidents (and subsequent suspensions) in recent years. Not sure it will carry over into the postseason – the stakes are too high in October to start drilling people, right? – but I can’t say it won’t be transferred.

“They don’t like us, we don’t like them, and it will continue to stay that way,” Ray midfielder Kevin Kiermaier told reporters. including Erik Boland of Newspaper, on Fridays.

The Rays dominated the regular season series with New York. They won eight out of 10 games and beat them 47-34, although the Yankees didn’t have Giancarlo Stanton or Aaron Judge for most of those games. The massive pair are in good health now and they’ve teamed up to hit three home runs against Cleveland’s big throwing staff in the Wild Card Series sweep.

As always, the Rays will try to stifle their opponent with speed and balls-breaking effects while receiving input up and down the formation in an offensive manner. When the Rays win, it takes a village. The Yankees can count on top players to have that one moment of impact in a game. Both approaches work and give these two teams success in recent seasons.

Despite the regular season streak, I’m going with the Yankees in Game 1. Cole has been on another level for the past six weeks or so, and the New York bout has been blocked against Cleveland. Right now, they’re as dangerous as they seemed at any time in 2020. Give me the Yankees and Cole in a close-up Game 1, with Gio Urshela getting The Big Hit.
